Created Equal

There’s a thing happening in my church’s denomination that is a huge problem and will likely cause many people to leave if it’s not resolved in a way that recognizes that women and men are equals and that women should be ordained. It’s a long story, and there are a lot of other places to read about the issues, but close to home, this hopeful thing happened last week:

I invited our female pastor to speak to a few friends – some of whom are considering leaving the church over this issue – and I hosted them in our house last Friday night. The baby was asleep but Future President had a hard time falling asleep because our voices carried down the hall to his bedroom. Eventually he fell asleep, but the next morning he asked, “Mommy, why were all of the girls so loud?”

“We were talking about something really important.” I told him. “Not every church has a woman pastor like Pastor J. So we were talking about how to fix that.”

And without a pause, he said, “What?! But Mommy, the Declaration of Independence says that all men are created equal.”

Turns out we’re doing something right.*

*And many thanks to B and the Christmas gift of Wee Sing America, which gets played on repeat in the car. Thanks to her and that CD, my kids know the words to all the famous Americana songs and, as it turns out, the Declaration of Independence.

  1. I love the proactive, positive, spiritual, communal step you took.

I know there is heartache. May all be blessed together, with each other and by each other.
