My son turned three (3!) this weekend. So I wrote him this letter.
Dear Future President,
You’re three years old today. It’s hard to believe that such a long (and short) time has passed since you made your appearance.
Today I am thankful for you for so many reasons. You gave Daddy and I reasons to smile when life was really rough. Soon after I found out I was pregnant, Daddy’s post-graduation job fell through and we were scared and wondered how we would make do. Daddy found another job, and while it wasn’t his dream, you are the reason we could laugh through our tears when life threw us curveballs. Your laugh is contagious and now you tell the funniest jokes. You absorb everything and we are so proud of you. We are amazed at your capacity to love and your strength of character.
On Friday morning, when you announced that you were throwing your pacifier in the trash, my heart broke and my eyes welled up with tears. We had been preparing you for months that when you turned three, it was time to say goodbye to beloved “blue.” And you did it all by yourself.
You are getting braver in swimming lessons, you are climbing ladders at the playground and you are learning how to share your toys. At your birthday party, you gladly let your friends play with your trains and let them cuddle with favorite stuffed animals.
Thank you for giving us so much joy. We love you.
